And I created a flowchart for it:

But seriously. All the comments lately are the exact same and so predictable. Is today’s Camaro expensive? Sure is. But might it be an investment that you buy now and sell at Barrett-Jackson a couple years down the road? You know that the price will go up if one of the signature-owners passes...

The argument “but for that price I can buy bleh and do blah and have money left over for gruh” is definitely valid but people lean on it so heavily they forget that sometimes there is more to NP/CP than that car’s price vs what you might salvage from the scrap yard.

Investment grade cars are bullshit.

CP.

I can get much better art for my garage.

The only thing I don’t like about the car today is that I don’t believe signed cars are interesting enough to be worth more.

I agree with you... but I’m not only referring to today’s car. This seems to be the theme in general with NP/CP. People compare it to some unattainable ideal and with that grading scheme almost everything will come out a CP.

plus, like any investment you’re taking the risk that the value won’t increase. The moneyed Boomers who are paying insane prices for the muscle cars they longed for in their youth are aging out and future demand for these things isn’t guaranteed.

My going thing for NPoCP is that if it’s under $3k-$4k and running well then it’s Nice Price. Everything else is on a case by case basis.

That’s what I mean. You’ve already set these baseline figures for yourself so anything over $4k will get scrutinized and is way more likely to get voted CP. Automatically voting a <$3k running car NP? I don’t need a cheap clunker just because it happens to run. But we’re all different... this is almost a psychology thing more than a car thing.

True enough. I mean, some people dislike certain brands, so it’ll always be CP if it’s a Ford. Or maybe they love old cars, so everything is NP. It’s not so much what the actual financial value is of the vehicle but what people perceive the financial value to be, in relation to what they want. Hence my automatic NP: if a vehicle runs for under $3k and has no issues, that’s already an awesome deal.

Because what kind of sane, rational human being would want one nice car when you could have 4 crappy ones??

I like that criteria. Another one is if it runs, drives and stops for less than $1000 it’s a deal. Sure I won’t be recommending anyone rely on a sub-grand beater as their daily driver but everyone loves a good beater and if it moves under its own power good times can be had.

Buying a car as an investment instead of something to be used and enjoyed goes against pretty much everything I believe in, but I do agree that the FP commenters have been ridiculous

I think you can buy a car, enjoy it, and still make money off of it. For instance the Carrera GT (only because I recently saw one on the road) initially sold for $440k. I found one on Autotrader with 50,000 miles and an asking price of $735k. Granted this is an extreme scenario but the point is the two are not mutually exclusive.

I wonder what it’s like to just have too much money...

You can, absolutely. But what I’m saying is the thought of being able to make money reselling a car later will never influence my buying decision, because that’s not why I buy cars. If I do manage to sell it for a profit later that’s great, but it would be coincidence, not objective.

I find that the votes are usually a pretty accurate judge of enthusiast  value actually. Like if it’s worth the money as a driving machine, regardless of who’s signed it or what it’s curb appeal may be. Lots of cars are a screaming deal for 10k and there are lots of cars I would walk from at 5k even in good shape because I know I can find better. Actually, even at 3k. I’m not interested in your Corolla, even if it would make a solid daily driver because for just a hair over 3k(each) I have a clean, if high-mileage, 4Runner that can take me and a large helping of gear just about anywhere I might want to go an E36 318ti that has provided hours of backroad fun on top of being a flawlessly reliable and reasonably fuel-efficient daily driver.

At the expense of driving cars? Yeah it does. There are better investments to make money and better uses for cars.

I posted this in reply to Dusty Ventures:

This is someone who thoroughly enjoyed their car and made big money off of it. It’s all subjective. In fact, a car can be a very good investment if you know what you’re doing.

Furthermore I wasn’t just talking about today’s car. All NP/CP replies follow the same formula and there is no variety. It’s boring as hell to read.

If it’s more than $2k and not just a ratty NA Miata track car, I need working air conditioning for it to be NP — after all, I live in Texas!

I agree, but only thing I’d change is enthusiast to cheap gearhead . Anyone can be an enthusiast of anything - you can be a Ferrari enthusiast for instance - but the cars the win NP status are usually unique, easy to work on/reliable, and most importantly cheap. There are exceptions (I think that includes yourself) but on the whole that’s what we get. I’m interested, I might collect some stats about it if I’m extra bored.

I try to consider the actual value of the car to someone in that market, not necessarily what I could afford/would buy. 50 grand for a solid F430? Great price! I still can’t afford it but whoever can and did got a great buy. 56 grand for a supercharged 2010 Camaro with someone’s signiture on it? Go find a 2015 Z28, that’s a better enthusiast value for similar(probably a bit less) money.

That being said in general people who frequent Jalopnik and Oppo tend to be on a budget so that’s what speaks to us a bit better.
